the best beaches and parks near cayucos


Cayucos and the surrounding areas have a number of beautiful beaches and parks for you to enjoy. Below, we've listed a few of our favorites. For each beach or park we've also included the distance from the park to Cayucos Sunset Inn. For more information on our local beaches and parks, give us a call. We look forward to hearing from you!

cayucos state beach


Distance: 0.3 miles

Cayucos State Beach is a beautiful sandy beach that forms the waterfront for the town of Cayucos. The beach has a gradual slope, making it perfect for tidepooling, swimming, and surfing. Cayucos Pier, an historic wooden fishing pier, is open to the public day and night, and you don't need a fishing license to enjoy fishing from the pier. Cayucos Pier provides excellent views of the beach, Cayucos, and Morro Rock.

Lifeguards are on duty during the summer months. Cayucos State Beach also has playground equipment, picnic areas, restrooms, and outside showers. Dogs are allowed on the beach from Cayucos Pier to Chaney Avenue, but they must be leashed.

hardie park


Distance: 0.6 miles

Hardie Park is a popular place with Cayucos locals. This well-maintained, four-acre park is a short walk from Cayucos Beach and from Ocean Drive. It's a great location to step away from the water and enjoy a family picnic or cookout. The park is definitely equipped for family fun. It has a kid's playground area and small pool, a horseshoe throwing area, a couple of tennis courts, a covered group area, picnic tables, a barbeque pit, and a heated pool. The heated pool is handicapped accessible.

At Hardie Park, you can also have access to a number of dressing rooms and showers. You can call ahead and reserve the tennis courts, the group day-use area, and the pool. In general, the park is open every day from 8:00 AM until sunset.

morro bay state park


Distance: 9.2 miles

If you're looking for a large park with a variety of activities for you to enjoy, Morro Bay State Park is exactly what you're looking for. Here, you can enjoy hiking, bird watching, fishing, sailing, golf, and many other activities. The park features Morro Rock, a well-known landmark, as well as a lagoon and a saltwater marsh with a large bird population. The park also includes a Museum of Natural History, which features various exhibits, lectures, special tours, puppet shows, and nature walks. An 18-hole golf course is also open to the public. A marina at the park offers kay rentals and has a restaurant in the park.

Morro Bay State Park is open daily from 10:00 AM until 10:00 AM. The museum is open daily from 10:00 AM until 5:00 PM. Dogs are allowed in the park. Note that the park can be quite cool, relative to inland areas, so dress accordingly.   

cayucos skate park


Distance: 0.4 miles

Cayucos Skate Park is a public park filled with primarily wooden skateboard ramps. Bikes are not allowed at the park. Cayucos Skate Park is a very short distance from Cayucos Beach, close to the Cayucos Pier entrance. You'll need to bring you own equipment since the park does not offer rentals.

All riders must wear helments. Kids under 12 have to wear knee pads, as well. Cayucos Skate Park can also be used by rollerbladers; however, they are required to wear knee pads and wrist guards.  

harmony headlands state park


Distance: 5.9 miles
Harmony Headlands State Park is a 784-acre park just off Highway One, between Cayucos and Cambria. The park has an excellent trial with fantastic views of the Pacific Ocean and Morrow Bay. The trail is a 4.5-mile loop, with an elevation gain of 85 feet. It runs through a small valley up to scenic ocean bluffs.

Harmony Headlands State Park is open for hiking every day from 6:00 AM until sunset. It's best to get to the early since the parking lot only holds ten cars. If a parking spot isn't available, you do have the option of parking along Highway One. One portable restroom is located along the trail. Dogs, bicycles, and horses are not allowed at the park..
